One item maintains the coffee (with a built-in narrow, so you do not need a document filter), and the other item rests on top of the reasons and allows the the water drop down. The issue with the Melita brewer and others like it is that the coffee penetrates up the edges, and you have to keep cotton wool swab it off the edges so that it goes returning into the hot the water.
With the two-piece program that I have, the second item keeps the coffee down, so I do not have to do anything except add in the hot the water and just hold out for it to go down.
